Volunteer Job Description: MiCAFE Application Assistant

Worried about older adults you know having trouble making ends meat?

You can help! Sign up to be a volunteer with Michigan's Coordinated Access to Food (and benefits) for the Elderly, known as MiCAFE. MiCAFE volunteers help older adults apply for free help that can pay for food, medical care, prescriptions, and utility bills. It is a great way to make a big difference in the lives of older and help them stay healthy and independent.

Position Description
Volunteers work at local community centers using MiCAFE's simple, internet-based computer system. Volunteers also have the opportunity to provide seniors with a personalized nutrition risk assessment, information on how to eat healthy, and referrals to resources in the community make their lives happier and healthier.

Commitment
Training: MiCAFE volunteers must attend 6-8 hours of training to learn about available programs and the application process. Volunteers also receive hands-on computer training to learn how to navigate MiCAFE's computer system. Some times the training is as a group, but some times it is one on one.

Availability: Volunteer hours can be flexible. A regular commitment of 4 hours per week is ideal. There are MiCAFE sites in 30 counties in Michigan (see list below).

Requirements
MiCAFE volunteers must be reliable, trustworthy, pass a criminal background check, and have the ability to communicate effectively with senior citizens. Prior experience using the internet is desirable but not necessary.
