Arlington Works!, a new AmeriCorps Virginia project, seeks a team of 7 full-time AmeriCorps members who are passionate about serving immigrant adults, youth, and children. Members will make a difference by supporting the project's goals of delivering high-quality and transformative programs that develop students' English, Spanish, technology, employment, and civic skills.
SERVICE POSITIONS AVAILABLE: One year beginning on or about September 1, 2011
All Arlington Works! Members will work as a team to: Provide language, employment, and technology instruction
*ESOL INSTRUCTOR (3 positions):
AmeriCorps instructors will teach ESOL classes to adults using the REEP Adult ESL Curriculum (http://www.apsva.us/reep), enhance and expand instructional programming and resources, and engage REEP students and community volunteers in service and other civic engagement activities.
*SPANISH & CULTURE INSTRUCTOR (1 position):
The AmeriCorps instructor will teach Spanish to immigrant children at elementary schools using the Santillana curriculum. A strong command of both English and Spanish is required.
*PARENT & ESOL INSTRUCTOR (1 position):
The AmeriCorps Instructor will teach adult English classes using the REEP Curriculum, expand the parent leadership program, and develop technology trainings for parents. A strong command of both English and Spanish is required.
*EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM (ELP) COORDINATOR (1 position):
The AmeriCorps member will coordinate the ELP, support Hispanic high school students (9th-12th grades) through leadership development and college preparation, build relationships with key partners, recruit students and mentors, and train mentors. A strong command of both English and Spanish is required.
*EMPLOYMENT RESOURCES SPECIALIST (1 position):
The AmeriCorps member will assist clients with employment searches in Arlington Employment Center's Career Resource Center, provide employment workshops, and expand programming and resources. Spanish ability is desirable.
TRAINING AND ORIENTATION: Arlington Public Schools prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, pregnancy or marital status. AmeriCorps members will receive training and orientation to AmeriCorps, the immigrant population in Arlington, and Arlington Works! programs and service expectations. Training will include class observations, cross-cultural communication, working effectively with the foreign-born population, promoting civic participation, and recruiting/supporting volunteers. Members will also receive training specific to their service areas, e.g. teaching ESOL or Spanish, working with youth, providing job services.
